It took some years for the original painting to find a home, painted by Tom Roberts in 1895, it was displayed in Sydney and Melbourne with an asking price of £275 it was even reduced to 70 guineas in 1900. After he extensively revised it in 1927, J.W. Maund, a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW purchased it for 450 guineas in 1928, bargaining it down from the then asking price of 500 guineas. Roberts considered it his "big gem". At the time very few agreed. Less than a century later it is among Australia's best known and loved works of art. Here it is from Fiona Jude’s Country Threads range of Australian themed needlecraft products.
