Jacob van Hulzdönk (1582-1647) also known as Jan van Hulzdönk is one of the Flemish painters who played a role in the early development of the genre of still lifes with fruit, banquets and flowers. His work is still astonishingly contemporary because it is so true to life.

Here we have lemons oranges and what we now call pomegranates. Who knew they were called grenades then. It is a derivation of the French word "pomme grenade" for hand grenade which is no co-incidence as the hand grenade is based on the composition of the fruit, inside the grenade are tiny pellets of shrapnel that look similar to the seeds of the fruit. Today you have learned something new, I know I certainly did.
